Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between "Tutoring" and "Academic Coaching"?
While tutoring focuses on specific subject content (like a math test), academic coaching focuses on the “how” of learning. We build the executive function skills—such as task initiation, organization, and self-advocacy—that help students succeed across all subjects and transitions. We help students develop the systems and skills that support success in school and beyond.
Who do you support?
We primarily support neurodivergent learners, including those with ADHD, learning disabilities, developmental disabilities and a wide range of complex learning profiles. We work with students in elementary and high school, as post-secondary students and adult learners.
What areas of support do you provide?
ADHD & Executive Functioning: Building systems for time management, organization, focus and follow-through.
Learning Skills: Practical strategies for reading, writing, studying and test-taking.
Assistive Technology Training: Helping students master the tools that reduce barriers to learning and make school work more manageable.
Academic Readiness: Coaching for high school students preparing for the increased demands of college or university.
Parent Coaching: Helping families establish supportive routines that work for the whole household.
Is coaching available online or in-person?
We offer both online and in-person sessions to accommodate different learning needs and the busy schedules of Guelph families. In-person sessions can be accommodated at a variety of locations, including in-home support across Guelph and surrounding areas.
Is this service covered by insurance or government funding?
While we are not "clinical" providers (like Psychologists), our services often align with funding streams for eligible students. We recommend checking with your insurance provider regarding "Academic Strategist" or "Coaching" coverage.
Post-Secondary Students:
BSWD (Bursary for Students With Disabilities)
CSG-DSE (Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment)
Elementary & High School Students:
Free to Grow program (Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington)
SSAH (Special Services At Home)
The "Medical Expense" Tax Credit (METC)
This is a "hidden" government support. In Ontario, "Tutoring services" or "Learning Disability treatments" can be claimed as a medical expense if a medical practitioner (Doctor or Psychologist) certifies in writing that the service is necessary.
How often do you meet with students?
Most students find the most success with weekly or bi-weekly sessions. This frequency allows us to build a rhythm, troubleshoot real-time academic challenges, and ensure strategies are actually being implemented. Some students may require more frequent twice weekly check-ins, while more independent students may only need occasional check-ins, or simply a few starter sessions to find their focused path.
How do I get started?
The process starts with a complimentary 20-minute discovery call. This allows us to ensure we are the right fit for your student’s unique needs. You can request a consultation via our website or by emailing focusedpathlearning@gmail.com.
